You need as much as is necessary to get your point across and no more. Waffling on will confuse and lose visitors quickly.
Pictures are good if your products are highly visual. If not then why take up download time with something that adds nothing to the viewers experience. You are reading this site and there is not a single picture on it. There are some beautifully designed sites that take so long to download that people look elsewhere.
Give prominence on the site to promotions or special offers that may attract the eye.
Put your best foot forward as they say and make sure that your best sellers are noticed first. Use them to entice people further into you product catalogue and whoopee, the viewer is inspecting your wares.
Do not make any page too long. If the page depth is going beyond a couple of screens then there had better be a rivetingly good reason for it. If not, edit it.
